tekno commented on The very white poetry of 'Mad Men'
"But it's what Don and his people have to lose that ultimately renders it esoteric. The ultimate nightmare for these folks is to lose the lifestyle that government and industry have sold to them." I don't know if that's really a fair interpretation. Other than the fleeting "golly look how expensive Don's new car is" moments, which almost happen by-proxy, Mad Men has never really been about economic conquest. It's about people trying to achieve happiness and fulfillment. What they stand to lose are their souls. The ultimate nightmare for these folks (and what happened to pretty much every single one of them, over the course of season 5) is to have everything they wanted, and realize it doesn't fill the hole.Posted on June 11th, 2012 6:20am
