macartney, I disagree. It may be standard practice to remove an inadvertent "um" from someone's verbal response to a question, but she provided that statement in an email. She clearly wanted it to be quoted (probably for effect), or she would have deleted it.

The Daily News is a mess today, which is a shame because their hed is so much better than the Post's. One thing worth mentioning: the Post has an inset photo of DePrimo, who's a young, not overly handsome but still good-looking guy, next to the dek. Since tabloid culture often equates good-looking with good morals, the inset photo adds to the emotion of pride in what DePrimo did. The Post's hed may make a halfhearted attempt to put this in some larger narrative of controversial police tactics, but the inset photo personalizes the story: it's not just some random cop helping a homeless man; it's this young, good-looking, humble cop.
