I had the great pleasure to see Cecil Taylor and band in Los Angeles in 1999. Though I'd heard records like Conquistador!, Unit Structures and some Candid material to that point (and a whole lot since,) the records can only hint at the power and spectacle of his live performances. This tribute is long overdue, but then so is any meaningful recognition that comes to this masterful musician's way. Long may he live!
