johnnieutah commented on 'Daily News' doctored front-page photo from Boston bombing

Unbelievable that they would claim this was out of sensitivity. What other core journalistic principles would they be willing to violate in the name of "sensitivity"? Really, really shameful, and I say that as a tabloid newsroom veteran.

johnnieutah commented on Dusted by a Manti Te'o break, the 'Post' goes back to Hillary the Harridan

That said, I think the News could have devoted the whole front to their Manti Te'o story, they probably didn't since there's no new photography to go with it.

Post goes down hard today. The Hillary cover has a very sexist feeling, and is just not a great photo besides. Great photos generally do not feature the subject in profile. Plus, there is still plenty of steam left in the astonishing Te'o story. I'm certain readers of both tabs would rather follow a scandal involving a young athletic star than a worn-out post hoc framing of our Secretary of State as a scolding harridan.

johnnieutah commented on Obama, memorably, with the father of Emilie Parker

The photo on the cover of the Post is just better - it's clearer and a more natural angle on the President's face. Additionally, the Post cover isn't cluttered with a lot of other distracting text - it privileges a single, emphatic word at the top and tells a concise story. The News may be going for more nuance but it just seems muddier, especially with red type/white stroke multiword legend at the bottom of the page. It's just a bad layout that tries to do too much.

johnnieutah commented on Post-Labor Day parade of horrors: Gropez and the scary Jets clowns

I prefer the Post's NFL sale, which is far more colorful whether or not I agree with the sentiment. As a rabid Jets fan, I agree that most of us are resigned to a cartoonish season ahead. I don't think it's helping the News visually to put a literal schedule on the cover - can't we get that inside? Put a sexy star player or a funny illo on the front. I love your "Gropez". Send it to the Post art department!

johnnieutah commented on News forces change at the housing authority; what'll happen with the Post's 'unsecure' chain at JFK?

Totally hands down win for the News today. Nice work! The Post ought to be embarrassed fronting Ms Dupre with a completely concocted non-sex non-story.

johnnieutah commented on S&M-themed 'Post' like 50 Shades of Grey without the tie

Ha! I would have gone the other way today. The inset with the explosion wreckage is certainly good!, but the full-length art of hot people with the whiff of sex about them makes for MUCH better art. Sure, the story falls apart once I dug in past the second paragraph, but by then I'd spent my 75 cents. I would not be shocked if the Post cover were to inspire some Law & Order-like TV plotlines. News has a better-reported, more heartwrenching story. But Post has the art NAILED on this one. Seriously, if that guy is 53, I'll have what he's having (unless it's abused, indentured young people - it is, isn't it?).

johnnieutah commented on The sad eyes of Robert Pattinson and the New England-y house of Taylor Swift

I totally would have gone the other way today! In fact, when I saw the papers on this morning's newsstand, I thought the Taylor Swift cover was on the front of the Post. The News is definitely upping the gossip wars, I also prefer the stolen car story to the hostile workplace one (the Maserati makes for much sexier art). Kudos to Myler for starting to challenge the Post on its own turf, it's been too long since the tabloids have really had to fight it out.

johnnieutah commented on More reverberation from the Darrius Kennedy shooting in Times Square

When the chips are down, the News seems to far prefer a national story to a rehash of a local one. Post is always going to go for the New York angle, no matter what.

johnnieutah commented on The very white poetry of 'Mad Men'

I'm super interested in how many responses are urging you to watch 'The Wire"! I personally have found 'Mad Men' very difficult to watch, primarily because, as a female professional in a male-dominated workplace, the sexism of the show REALLY bums me out. Of course it's historically accurate and making a larger point, but I experience sexism every day and it's just not what I want to do with my leisure time.
