Long before Pete King there was J. Russell Sprague who was the one who created the Nassau G.O.P machine. He was not only the chairman party but also County Executive from 1938 to 1953,indeed, I think he was one created the position of County Executive.He fall from grace over scandal dealing from horse racing track.The liberal Joseph Carlino would become boss of the machine and Speaker of the assembly from 1958 to 1964.Nelson Rockefeller in 1958 wanted Carlino to be his running mate to ran for U.S Senate but Carlino knew Speaker Heck was dying,hence,he would be speaker and severe the interest of the machine better then if he was Senator.So Keating got the nomination and went on to the U.S Senate.
