FosterKamer commented on Can 'Vice' keep it real, after lauds from the media establishment's most establishmenty award-dealers?

The Paintball with Hezbollah story is probably my favorite thing I've read this year so far. I can imagine a bunch of magazines who'd *want* to run it, but I can't see anyone but VICE *actually* publishing it. The question, I guess, is if the piece best served by the medium of VICE (and its editorial tone)? Even if the New Yorker were to run something like it, I can easily see them giving it a glaze of oddly harsh politicization and layers of subtext. The problem, though, is that the piece could reach so much wider of an audience who will never go near it because it's in VICE. Still. In 2012. Even with Marizo Catalan's art on the cover. Wonder what, if anything, would change that. And if anyone at VICE necessarily cares either way.

FosterKamer commented on Everything that converges must be workshopped: New York media flees town for SXSW conference

You know those summer weekends in the city, when it's bare of all those who have taken the Jitney and associated routes out of the city, and it feels kind of like Disney World without the lines, except in this instance, the lines are insufferable assholes? SxSW is like that, but instead, you just get to have the pleasure of not having to experience the very thing all of those people on Twitter are Tweeting about. Also, Tom and Jerry's momentarily becomes a pleasant place to drink again, however briefly. SxSW Interactive is like Davos for people who didn't get into Davos, and all the people who got their bosses to pay for Davos but who still couldn't crash the good Davos parties. How anyone rationalizes going to SxSW as anything other than brand promotion (to people already familiar with your brand) or a vacation-cum-writeoff vacation is beyond me.

Smaller pieces that pivot around larger ones! Or rather, shorter-swing takes on the news of the day. In any other hands, it's usually pithy. But I trust that you guys wouldn't ever just aggregate! Go! Fight! Win!

Yes: You should get into that here more often and devote more attention to it! Unless I'm the only one who finds that kind of currency/cachet chase fascinating? Given the fact that the Post's existence once Murdoch kicks the bucket might actually hinge on these kinds of factors thereafter - because as you mentioned, the "money" factor has long been written off, trying to argue otherwise is silly, and also, WSJ beats rock/NYP every time - that pursuit could get pretty interesting.
