The overtones of Haight-Ashburyness and debt to everything from Dylanesque plaintive blues realness to wacky Silver Apples-style experimentalism has been on the wax for some time now in Brooklyn; it's getting to the point where it's hard to separate the good from the bad. Sometimes playing this music, even when it's good, is a fairly simple proposition, so the barrier to entry in terms of imagination and originality can be low. That's why it's such a crowded field—and so hard for a hipster-folky to be heard above the non-din.
