The crowd was milling around Chocolat, the new Leon Ellis restaurant on Frederick Douglass Boulevard at the corner of 120th Street, when Charlie Rangel walked through the door. He shook a few hands, grinning from ear to ear, and then went straight for the microphone. “I don’t normally just come in and take the mic,” he told the crowd. Sculpture loses a dimension, gains several at MOMA

Tenants' rights rally ends in arrests

After the speeches, the protesters marched from City Hall to the New York City Housing Authority building shouting, “Housing is a right! Fight! Fight! Fight!” Thirteen—McKee included—sat in a line that blocked off the NYCHA entrance. As the protestors continued their chant, police officers asked them to get up from the sidewalk. One officer filmed the scene. One by one, their hands were tied behind their backs, and were led off by police officers on charges of civil disobedience. More

Money-making world-record-breaking group convenes, sets records

The database has four full-time staff members who manage the website and oversee record-breaking, along with a few advisers and the occasional intern. Database manager Rod Birdsong said they just moved from a small office in Brooklyn to a larger space in Manhattan, “which we are hoping to fill out.” And they make money, Birdsong says. The URDB teams up with companies like Jet Blue and Ford to develop brand-sponsored records. The staff is now working on its first book of records and a television show pilot. More

The funny thing is that the Epoch Times is actually a big publication. It is an international paper that prints in 33 countries and 17 languages, including Ukrainian, Bulgarian and Slovak, and calls New York its center. More

The photojournalist as advocate

The panelists were introduced as “human rights photographers,” referred to as journalists, and suggested by one student to be advocates. They projected anthropological curiosity and artistic sensibility.  Much conversation sprung from trying to figure out exactly what they are and what they are doing. More
