Convey, who is studying in CUNY's entrepreneurial journalism concentration, says he's learning new things about the business-side and technological aspects of media—what it takes to run a startup; how data visualization works; editing video with Final Cut Pro. He was, however exempted from the fundamental writing and reporting courses, which isn't to say his schooling lacks a certain journeyman element; in a features-writing class this semester, he's been brushing up on his Lillian Ross and Gay Talese as well as workshopping a profile of Daily News columnist Denis Hamill.(2)
Starting this week, the News will run regular fashion features in its Thursday and Sunday editions, mirroring the popular style formula of The New York Times and marking a return to a beat it had abandoned in recent years. The change takes effect just in time for Fashion Week, which kicks off on Sept. 6.(3)
If their exit is a sign of a larger realignment at the paper under its new editor, Colin Myler, who replaced outgoing editor Kevin Convey at the beginning of the year, then it is a very slow-moving realignment.(1)
Kevin Convey, ousted 'News' editor, in newsroom farewell; he was 'blindsided,' even though his successor was picked in October
"I'm sure he was worried about his job, but he probably thought the threat came from Arthur Browne," said a person who knows Convey.
The rollout of Convey's dismissal didn't begin until the end of December, even though the paper had been in talks with Myler since the fall, said a person familiar with the situation. The Myler negotiations were kept tightly under wraps, and even top newsroom brass wouldn't have been aware of them until at least the first of the year. Convey is, according to sources, on a contract that expires this summer.(1)
After a year and a half, the Daily News has a new editor-in-chief. It's Colin Myler, according to an email I've obtained, which also includes a quote from the paper's publisher, Mort Zuckerman, praising the outgoing editor-in-chief, Kevin Convey.
Colin Myler has been appointed editor-in-chief of The New York Daily News and NYDailyNews.com. The Daily News is New York’s largest-circulation daily newspaper and NYDailyNews.com is the 12th largest news site in the U.S. according to Comscore.(5)
"We're in the process of transitioning to a new content management system," Daily News spokeswoman Jennifer Mauer said. "So there was a bit of glitch that caused a technical error."
She said the error appears in some, but not all editions of the paper circulating today.
This week we spent some time with Charlie Rangel, the embattled dean of New York's congressional delegation; Francisco Rodriguez, the embattled slugger; chef Ed MacFarland, writer Alan Furst, and incoming Daily News editor Kevin Convey. Some Sunday reading for you!
Kevin Convey's office at the Boston Herald isn't far from downtown Boston, but its windows look southeast, across a freeway, toward Southie, the longstanding Irish and white ethnic Boston enclave that, in the past two decades, has rapidly gentrified. On the wall behind his desk is a picture of Che Guevara.(1)
