An Espaillat supporter who doesn't sound like other Espaillat supporters

This morning, State Senator Adriano Espaillat's congressional campaign posted a video highlighting their endorsement from Vincent Morgan, a former aide to Charlie Rangel, the incumbent they're trying to oust. In the video, Morgan seems to make a slightly different pitch than the campaign generally has to this point, suggesting that voters are looking beyond "surface issues, like our race and socioeconomic standing." Vince Morgan, a former Rangel aide and rival, endorses Adriano Espaillat against his old boss

Hours before Rep. Charlie Rangel's first public appearance since February, one of the congressman's rivals dropped out of the race and backed State Senator Adriano Espaillat in the primary for Rangel's seat.

Vince Morgan, a local banker who previously signaled he wasn't campaigning anymore, said the district "needs someone who can unite us and move our neighborhood forward." More

A former Rangel aide reconsiders a congressional challenge: 'I'm leaving all of my options open'

"Politics is a funny thing," he told me, when I asked him about it. "You're mentioned in certain articles and not mentioned in certain articles. I've kept a relatively low profile in the last couple of weeks as I've seen this play out."

When I said it sounded like he wasn't sure about running, Morgan said, "I'm leaving all of my options open right now. I have until the 13th to submit petition signatures to get on the ballot." More

Espaillat making preparations for war against Charlie Rangel

Adriano Espaillat is preparing for nuclear war with Charlie Rangel. The only question is whether he'll push the button.

It's mostly biographical, and doesn't go anywhere near the topic of the incumbent himself. More

Rangel's challengers have modest war chests, for now

Rep. Charlie Rangel raised $60,000 between October and December and has $250,000 on hand for his re-election bid, according to his spokesman, Bob Liff. That would trump anything the 21-term Harlem Democrat is facing from his challengers so far. More

Profiting from a small moment in the political history of the Rangel district

Charlie Rangel may have had his reasons (namely, fund-raising) for making a big deal of the news that one of his prospective 2012 challengers recently conducted a poll in the district. But he was right to mark the poll as something of an occasion.

The survey was commissioned by Clyde Williams, a former political director for the Democratic National Committee, and it appears to be the first time in years that a challenger to Rangel has polled in the district. More

Clyde Williams makes it semi-official, files exploratory paperwork to challenge Rangel

Last month, the New York Times reported that Clyde Williams, a political operative with ties to President Barack Obama and former president Bill Clinton, is considering a challenge to 81-year-old congressman Charlie Rangel, and that Williams had raised $50,000 so far.

At the time, there was no campaign or exploratory committee on file with the Federal Election Commission. But yesterday the Clyde Williams for Congress Exploratory Committee was officially filed with the F.E.C., allowing Williams to raise and spend money for a prospective race. (The paperwork is dated November 1, or one day after the Times story appeared.) More

Confirmed Rangel opponent Vince Morgan attacks possible Rangel opponent Clyde Williams

A new face with ties to Presidents Obama and Clinton is emerging in the crowded field to replace 81-year-old Charlie Rangel in Harlem.

Clyde Williams "has the makings of a formidable challenger given his political background with two presidents" Ray Hernandez wrote today in the New York Times, noting Williams was Clinton's deputy chief of staff in the agriculture department and in Obama's choice to be political director at the Democratic National Committee.

Williams also help set up a small-business initiative in Harlem when he worked for Clinton, and says he has kept a residency in the district for years.

But Williams' connections to Washington may be as much of a problem as an asset. More

After Rangel...what?

There are three men and one woman running against Charlie Rangel, the legendary Harlem Congressman and dean of the New York delegation, in the September 15 Democratic primary. The four of them combined have so far raised less than half the $800,000 Rangel raked in this year and none of them has any support from the political establishment.

This ought to be a great opportunity for these aspirants to the historic Harlem Congressional seat. Rangel has been reeling for a while now from a succession of ethics controversies, and last week, he was formally charged by the House ethics committee with, among other violations, illegally using rent-stabilized apartments for campaign work and failing to disclose rental income from a yacht club in the Dominican Republic.
