The Giants are not resting on their laurels after their Super Bowl season. And neither is Justin Tuck.
As far as utility, this facemask serves the same purpose as last year’s: to prevent offensive linemen from grabbing his facemask. Tuck originally requested the Canty model after the season’s third game, after Philadelphia’s Todd Herremanns aggravated a neck injury by grabbing his facemask.
In terms of style, Tuck’s new grill places him at the N.F.L. vanguard.
“The current mask he wears is available to the public already, so he said, ‘Let’s change it up,’” said Joe Skiba, the Giants equipment manager, who designed the mask, which was manufactured by Schutt.
(The Canty mask has been dubbed "The Big Grill” by Schutt.)
“It’s like everything else – it’s all about staying ahead of everybody,” Skiba said.
Skiba said that the mask is made out of titanium and is therefore “light as a feather,” as opposed to the much heavier stainless steel masks.
Reaction to it has been enthusiastic, according to Skiba.
“[Tuck] loves it. And the locker room is going nuts. But as long as Justin loves it, you’re doing your job.”
And if he doesn't?
“I have another one on the back burner just in case,” Skiba said.
