To help Elizabeth Colbert Busch, Gillibrand emails about the specter of Mark Sanford
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is trying to help Elizabeth Colbert Busch pull off an upset in South Carolina.
Last night, shortly after former governor Mark Sanford won the Republican run-off for the right to challenge Colbert Busch in next month's special election, Gillibrand emailed her list to warn about the prospect of returning Sanford to elected office.
"This is the same Mark Sanford who, as governor, disappeared from office and used taxpayer money to visit his mistress," Gillibrand wrote, under the subject line, "Breaking News: Sanford."
Gillibrand cited a survey from the left-leaning Public Policy Polling that suggested Colbert Busch was up two points in the heavily Republican district, and asked supporters to help her close the gap in fund-raising with Sanford. She made sure to mention that her own Off the Sidelines PAC had already made a conrtibution.
Colbert Busch's race is getting a disproportionate amount of national attention, in part because of Sanford's past transgressions, but also because her brother is Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert.
Gillibrand is co-hosting a fund-raiser in Washington later this month with Colbert, who has stepped out of the Republican character he plays on Comedy Central to help his sister in the race.
Gillibrand didn't mention him by name in her email, but there was a reference.
"Elizabeth is exactly the kind of person we need in elected office," she wrote. "She has real accomplishments for middle-class families. And, she pronounces the 't' in Colbert."
Here's the full email:
Former South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford just won the Republican runoff for the 1st congressional district Special Election tonight.
This is the same Mark Sanford who, as governor, disappeared from office and used taxpayer money to visit his mistress.
With all the issues we are working on, we do not need him in Congress. Fortunately, there is a strong independent woman running to give us a better alternative named Elizabeth Colbert Busch.
The latest release from Public Policy Polling shows the campaigns are virtually tied right now, but Sanford has a big money advantage.
I talked to Elizabeth and told her we are going to do everything we can to make sure she wins. My Off The Sidelines PAC has already contributed to Elizabeth’s campaign, but with only 35 days until Election Day, she needs all of our help.
Republican party bosses know they can’t run on Sanford’s record, so they are going to attack Elizabeth. She needs us to fight back. Will you join me, right now, in contributing to her campaign?
