Video of Kirsten Gillibrand scolding military brass on response to sexual assault
Here's video of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand dressing down military officials over the number of sexual assaults and rapes in the military and the provisions currently in place to investigate and prosecute such incidents.
"I appreciate the work that you are doing, I honestly do. But it's not enough," she said during the hearing last week. "And if you think you are achieving discipline and order with your current convening authority framework, I am sorry to say you are wrong."
To underscore her point, Gillibrand asked a case where Air Force Lt. Gen. Craig Franklin overturned a sexual assault conviction that had been reached by a military trial.
"Was justice done in that case?" Gilibrand asked the Air Force's Judge Advocate, Lieutenant General Harding.
He declined to say anyone did anything wrong.
The issue of sexual assaults and rapes in the military dovetails neatly with two issues Gillibrand has made a central part of profile in the Senate: rights and protections for working women and the welfare of military personnel and veterans.
