Jumaane Williams joins the chorus against a Brooklyn College lecture about Israel
Add Councilman Jumaane Williams to the chorus of elected officials criticizing Brooklyn College, which is co-sponsoring an upcoming lecture from two speakers who support divestment from, and boycotting of, Israel.
Citing "concerns" about presenting only one side of the issue, he's calling for the school to make the event more balanced.
The school is Williams' alma mater and is located in his district. He's also a member of the Council's Progressive Caucus, where supporters of the lecture series were hoping to find some allies to defend the lecture.
In a letter to the school's president, Williams wrote that he believed strongly in the First Amendment, but was concerned that both sides of the issue were not being included.
"I support the views that have been expressed by my fellow alumnus Alan Dershowitz in this matter," Williams wrote.
Williams said he wanted to see "both sides of this hot-button matter to be discussed with equity, preferably in the same forum. If that cannot be accomplished, I urge the removal of the department’s sponsorship of this event."
