It has been said about a zillion times that Ed Koch was "larger than life," and his three terms, and subsequent prominence, form the basis of the axiom that New Yorkers demand such figures as their mayor.
(The updated version might be that they demand either that the mayor be larger than life or have a billion dollars.)
There is no candidate among the current crop of mayoral contenders who obviously fits that description. But Christine Quinn seemed to make a bid for it this week, beginning with that memorable New York cover, followed by her actually very sporting reaction to what a more self-serious or attention-hungry candidate might have blown into a very stupid controversy.
"I was hoping that I would look pretty and thin, not particularly jowly, which is how I usually look in pictures," she told the Post, for a mocking article. "I wasn’t in any shape or form managing the photo shoot."
And here she is at an event last night, signing that very same cover.
What Quinn and her people seem to recognize is that getting your picture on the front page of a major publication is, the vast majority of the time, a good thing.
In fact, one of the most extreme iterations of this principle is John Liu, whose campaign aides say that a series of unflattering front-page Daily News stories in 2009 served to distinguish him from a crowded Democratic field for comptroller that year, on his way to a convincing win.
By this logic, and judging by the latest polls, Quinn's rivals should be so lucky as to be made up like vampires on the cover of a major publication.

New York state Assemblywoman Vivian Cook allegedly funneled thousands of dollars in public money to a corrupt fellow legislator — and was then rewarded with lavish shopping trips underwritten by taxpayer funds, The Post has learned.
Cook — a 75-year-old Queens Democrat first elected to the Assembly more than two decades ago — helped procure the government money for an organization run by former state Sen. Shirley Huntley, according to several sources.
Huntley, a fellow Queens Democrat, pleaded guilty earlier this week to charges linked to her embezzlement of nearly $90,000 in public money from that organization, known as the Parents Information Network (PIN).

There is a mainstream citizen revolt against the attempt by societal elites and Mayor Bloomberg to install Quinn as the next Mayor of New York City. All levers of the media will be used in an effort to insure that reality against the prevailing and existing will of the people. In my estimation, Christine Quinn represents a doubling down by the elites in an effort to control the aftermath of what they have created for or imposed on the rest of us, through unchecked and uninvestigated government waste. 'Pontificating Poseur & Societal Elite Windbag' - Senator Tom Duane – an opportunistic and self professed LGBT hero and his protégé in identity politics, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn enabled her crony capitalist sponsor, Bill Rudin of Rudin Management and the Rudin Family to seize St. Vincent’s Hospital, the epicenter of the AIDS Crisis, for pennies on the dollar so the Rudin Family Luxury Blood Condos could be built in its place. Is this what Quinn’s sponsor believes will lead to “A Better New York” – that he trumpets through ABNY – the Association for a Better New York? The best AIDS Memorial is preservation of the hospital and treatment facility at the epicenter of the AIDS epidemic, for its humanity in treating patients not luxury condos in its place.
Quinn is now taking heat from the LGBT Community including her own Chelsea: District 3, because, her remarks (via mass email) praising Ed Koch upon his death, she didn't acknowledge his failure to address the AIDS Crisis as thousands of gay men were dying. The gay press has not yet mentioned the fact that Christine Quinn actually rewarded Koch for his endorsement, despite his preference for someone other than Quinn, by renaming the Queensboro Bridge after him in exchange for his unwavering support of her Mayoral candidacy. The Council and the public opposed the renaming of that bridge.
