Hours after Bill de Blasio officially declared his candidacy for mayor, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn appeared on the cover of New York magazine.

Quinn, the cover story says, is "the lesbian Tip O'Neill," a progressive and political pragmatist. The sub-headline on the cover says that she is "not at all like the man she hopes to replace." That's a reference to their respective styles.

Toward the end of the piece, writer Jonathan Van Meter says Quinn "is a politician whose interior emotional life is right there on the surface, for anyone to see. … It is this ability to emote and connect that offers the most vivid departure from a dozen years of Bloombergian just-the-facts-ma’am competence and equanimity."

Unrelated, I guess, the piece quotes Bloomberg himself, who, while speaking to Van Meter at a party, referred to another partygoer and said, "Look at the ass on her."

Quinn is already the best-known mayoral candidate and the front-runner in polls.

In March, Elle profiled her with the headline "Christine Quinn takes New York." A month later,The New Yorker had a piece on her called "Mayor Presumptive."
