Chain stores are proliferating at an ever-faster pace in New York City, with the number of storefronts occupied by national retailers jumping 2.4 percent from summer 2011 to summer 2012, compared to 1.8 percent the year prior.
There are now 7,190 chain stores in New York City. This is the fifth year in a row that there are more national chain stores in New York City than the year before, according to the Center for an Urban Future's fifth annual study ranking the presence of national retailers in New York City.
Dunkin Donuts remains the most robust chain in New York City, with 484 stores (up 18 from last year).
Subway, however, is closing the gap fast. It now has 454 stores in New York City, with 24 new ones added in the past year.
The rest of the top ten include Starbucks (272 stores); MetroPCS (261 stores); Duane Reade (246); McDonalds (241); Baskin-Robbins (200); Rite-Aid (196); T-Mobile (174); and GNC (143).
The borough with the fastest chain-store growth? The Bronx, with an increase of 4.3 percent. In gentrifying Manhattan and Brooklyn, the number of chains grew 2.6 percent. In Queens, they grew 2.1 percent.
Staten Island was the only borough to experience shrinkage, with the number of national retailers falling by .7 percent.
Over a five-year time span, Panera Bread showed the most rapid expansion, growing by 225 percent since 2008. J Crew came in second, with an increase of 117 percent, followed by Pret a Manger (113 percent).
The neighborhoods by borough with the most chain stores per square mile are Garment District/Koreatown in Manhattan; Flatlands in Brooklyn; Corona/Elmhurst in Queens; Parchester in the Bronx; and New Springville in Staten Island.
