Actor Steve Buscemi is endorsing Public Advocate Bill de Blasio for mayor, calling him "one of our city’s most compelling, progressive public servants," and joining John Turturro and Paul Simon in de Blasio's stable of celebrity supporters.
Buscemi, who plays Atlantic City gangster-mayor Nucky Thompson on "Boardwalk Empire," and starred in Fargo and the Big Lebowski, used to be a firefighter and credits de Blasio for helping fight firehouse closures.
He also recently visited the storm-damaged Breezy Point with the public advocate.
Buscemi described de Blasio as "the kind of guy who links arms with neighbors, knocks on doors with volunteers, and makes sure he’s on the ground, listening to the real problems that face our communities," but as far as celebrity endorsements are concerned, de Blasio has trailed the field a bit.
Council Speaker Christine Quinn, the very early frontrunner, counts Mario Batali, Harvey Weinstein, Jon Bon Jovi and Rob Reiner as supporters, and until he dropped out of the race, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer had Scarlett Johansson, Sigourney Weaver, Debra Winger and maybe also Lady Gaga in his corner.
