Leader of the Independent Democrats backs a regular Democrat in the Bronx
The leader of the Independent Democratic Conference, which is currently threatening to derail Democrats' effort to to take control of the state senate, has found a conventional Democrat he can get behind: Andrew Cohen, who is running for City Council.
A reader passed along this invitation to a Dec. 9 fund-raiser, hosted by State Senator Jeff Klein and three other Bronx Democrats, to benefit Cohen, who is running to replace term-limited councilman Oliver Koppell.
One of the signatories, Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz, recently urged Klein to return to the Democratic fold in Albany. The other hosts are Rep. Eliot Engel and Koppell, who is hosting the fund-raiser at his home.
The invitation notes Cohen is an "independent Democrat" (with a small "i").
"He is an independent Democrat committed to reform who knows when it is important to speak out and if necessary, criticize government for not serving the public interest," the letter, dated November 14, 2012 says.
