OPHTHPAC, the political action committee for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, is up with a new television ad in support of Rep. Nan Hayworth.
Hayworth, who is running a tough race for re-election in a swing district targeted by Democrats, is a licensed ophthalmologist who maintained a practice in the Hudson Valley before she was elected to Congress in 2010.
The ad doesn't specifically mention her ophthalmology credentials, but does emphasize her physician-like care for her constituents.
"When your health is at risk, you look for a specialist," says a female narrator, over an upbeat soundtrack. "New York families are hurting and thankfully they have a specialist to help: Dr. Nan Hayworth."
Hayworth is currently the only ophthalmologist serving in Congress, and the group spent $153,000 on the media buy, which represents about one-third of the committee's cash on hand at the end of August. (Another ophthamologist, John Cooksey of Louisiana, served in the House between 1997 and 2003.)
The ad also mentions Hayworth's support for women's health care. Her Democratic opponent, Sean Patrick Maloney, accused her in a recent ad of voting to "defund Planned Parenthood."
"As a female physician in Congress, Dr. Hayworth understands women's health care needs," the narrator in the OPHTHPAC ad says. Hayworth, in addition to being the only ophthalmologist in Congress, is also the lone female physician.
"One of the many advantages to being a citizen-legislator, rather than a career political operative, is the broad range of support that comes with extensive experience in areas like medicine and healthcare," said Michael Knowles, a spokesman for Hayworth, of the group's support.
The FEC filing indicates the ad buy was for four weeks of airtime. A spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmology declined to specify when and where it would be running.
