Governor Andrew Cuomo isn't speaking at the Democratic National Convention this year, but his remarks yesterday at the Democratic Party policy summit he organized in Manhattan seemed like a reasonable approximation.
Billed as an opportunity for experts to talk at length about challenges facing the state, the event was also an opportunity for Cuomo to articulate his vision for the party, much as he might have done at the convention, without clashing with the strictly-local context he's constructed for himself since becoming governor.
Here are some notable quotes from Cuomo's opening remarks:
"We believe that government is the vehicle for community and that's the essence of what the Democratic Party is all about."
"The vehicle for that collective action is government."
"What is government? Government is us."
"We believe government is the vehicle to achieve that success. Then the burden of proof is on you as a Democrat to show that the government can work."
