President Obama's campaign will host a basketball themed fund-raiser at Chelsea Piers later this month.
"Please join basketball's greatest super stars and shoot some hoops to benefit the Obama Campaign in New York City," says an invitation for the event on August 22.
It seems to be a family-friendly event, with a 2 p.m. start time on a Wednesday afternoon. Tickets are $250 for an autograph session; for $5,000 a parent and child get a "shoot around skills session" with the players.
The invitation doesn't specify the "super stars" who will be in attendance, and it could be almost anyone, given the level of support Obama has received from NBA players. (A spokesman for the campaign did not immediately return an email asking which players would be in attendance.)
In December, the campaign postponed the "Obama Classic," after the NBA resumed play following a brief lockout. The game was organized by Vince Carter, Baron Davis and Chris Paul to benefit the Obama campaign, and was to feature Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant, among others. It was supposed to be re-scheduled for this summer, but the New York event appears to be something slightly different.
Among the players who gave to Obama in 2008 were Lebron James and Magic Johnson. (Also, Ron Artest.)
