Here’s Al Sharpton, who used to make his living as a police critic but is now positioning himself as a moderator between NYPD commissioner Ray Kelly and some of his detractors, calling for Kelly to meet with opponents of the department's stop-and-frisk program.
At the 1-hour 15-minute mark in this video, Sharpton tells an audience at the National Action Network headquarters on Saturday, “If stop-and-frisk was working we wouldn’t have the shootings, so y’all is not getting the guns. And if all we were doing was working we wouldn’t have the shootings either. They cannot deny that there is a need for a collective program and we cannot deny that the violence is there.”
He added, “We have a violence problem and a civil-rights problem in this city.”
