Accompanying the Times' lengthy story this morning about Michael Bloomberg's push to get New Yorkers to slim down was a photograph of a few people exercising in the park. One person seen in the photo, but not identified in the caption or the story, was Gustavo Rivera, a Democratic state senator from the Bronx.

Rivera, who lost 27 pound last year and promised to lose an additional 10-15 pounds this year, is pushing several health initiatives and bills.

He supports the mayor's ban on large sugary drinks and participates in Bronx Can Health Initiative, which aims at improving heath conditions in the borough.

One of his bills would prohibit smoking within 100 feet of an entrance or exhibit of a private school building. Another would require having a licensed phys-ed teacher in every school district, and another would set nutrition standards for meals aimed at children.
