Wendy Long got some fund-raising help an old friend this afternoon, with an email appeal straight "from the desk of Grover G. Norquist."
Long is counting on some conservative connections from her days as a judicial activist to help her uphill campaign against Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and Norquist is one of the bigger names in national conservative circles.
In his email, Norquist said he's known Long "personally for over two decades" and cited her signature on his (in)famous tax pledge as proof of her conservative credentials.
But the combative Norquist didn't stop there, specificially criticizing her two Republican challengers in the June 26 primary.
"One of Wendy’s opponents has recently admitted that he won’t take tax hikes off the table, and the other serves as comptroller of New York’s Nassau County, which has some of the highest taxes in the nation and whose finances are in such bad shape that the state mandated the creation of a Financial Control Board to oversee it," Norquist wrote, in reference to Representative Bob Turner, and Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos.
Norquist's email, which includes five links to the donations page of her website, ends by expressing the hope Republicans continue to harbor that Gillibrand might be exposed by the right opponent in a general election.
"Their match-up will make national headlines as a commonsense conservative woman takes on the darling of the Far Left," Norquist wrote.
Here's the full email:
Dear Conservative Friend:
Many candidates are sending you emails and asking for your support this election year. Sadly, very few are true conservatives. I am writing you today about someone who is a true conservative, who I’ve known personally for over two decades, and her name is Wendy Long. She is running for United States Senate in New York.
Not only does Wendy believe in the conservative principles we hold in common, she also has the credentials to back them up. Wendy is an accomplished New York lawyer and mother, with a lifelong commitment to constitutional principles. She was a top staff member for two of the most outstanding citizen legislators of the Reagan era in the United States Senate: Bill Armstrong of Colorado and Gordon Humphrey of New Hampshire. She was a law clerk for Justice Clarence Thomas at the U.S. Supreme Court and for Judge Ralph Winter at the U.S. Court of Appeals in New York. She led a public advocacy group that worked to secure the U.S. Senate confirmations of Justice Samuel Alito and Chief Justice John Roberts to the Supreme Court. Her record of achievement speaks volumes. Wendy is running to unseat Senator Kirsten Gillibrand…..the same Kirsten Gillibrand that the non-partisan National Journal recently rated as the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate!
But, before Wendy Long can go toe-to-toe with Kirsten Gillibrand, she needs to defeat two primary opponents who don’t seem to share all of our conservative principles, and that’s why she needs your help today (Click Here).
One of Wendy’s opponents has recently admitted that he won’t take tax hikes off the table, and the other serves as comptroller of New York’s Nassau County, which has some of the highest taxes in the nation and whose finances are in such bad shape that the state mandated the creation of a Financial Control Board to oversee it.
Wendy Long has signed my pledge against raising taxes as a U.S. Senator. She continually reminds New Yorkers that Ronald Reagan was right: we do not have federal deficits because the American people are undertaxed; we have debt and deficits because the government spends too much. Wendy will fight to cut taxes and rein in wasteful spending, as well as to repeal and replace Obamacare and Dodd-Frank legislation with sensible, pro-growth, pro-competitive measures. She’ll fight against deficit spending and will do what’s necessary to shrink the national debt that is mortgaging the future of our children and grandchildren.
The New York Republican primary is June 26, and Wendy needs your help.
Please donate right now (Click Here) so Wendy has the money needed for the “Get Out The Vote” operation she needs to win.
Wendy Long is already the nominee of New York’s influential Conservative Party, which William F. Buckley helped create 50 years ago and which elected Jim Buckley to the U.S. Senate in 1970. She needs your support today (Click Here) so she can unite the Republican and Conservative Party for the November elections.
If you want to know more about Wendy and her deep-rooted conservative principles, please read this interview (Click Here) that recently appeared on National Review Online.
Midnight on Wednesday, June 6 is the cut-off date for Wendy’s next FEC filing. Won’t you please donate TODAY (Click Here) so that Wendy Long can have the cash she needs to win. Please give $20, $50, $100, $250 or whatever you can afford. You can make a tremendous difference in this race, which is such a critical one for our country.
If Wendy Long can capture the Republican ballot line in New York on June 26, she will have secured two November ballot lines and gained the momentum needed to face off against Kirsten Gillibrand in the general election. Their match-up will make national headlines as a commonsense conservative woman takes on the darling of the Far Left.
Grover G. Norquist
P.S. When Ambassador John Bolton recently endorsed Wendy Long, he called her “superbly qualified to represent New York in the U.S. Senate.” Ambassador Bolton is right. So please (Click Here) and give Wendy the support she needs before midnight tomorrow, June 6th. Thank you.
