Unlike his four Democratic challengers, Rep. Charlie Rangel isn't planning on going to the NY-13 candidates debate tonight on 181st Street, moderated by the League of Women Voters.

The 21-term lawmaker said he was unaware of it.

"You're putting me on," Rangel said, when I asked him whether he was planning to go. "You guys just make up stuff."

Rangel asked me who was organizing the event and where it was being held.

"Nobody from this group has talked to me about anything," he said. "Make that clear. And I think it's unfair if they did this."

According to the Hudson Heights Gazette, the event is being sponsored by the Hudson Heights Owners Coalition. I reached out to HHOC and the League and will update when I hear back from them.

UPDATE: Julia Attaway, the president of the Hudson Heights Owners Coalition, said the event was scheduled specifically so that Rangel could attend. Attaway told me by email, "Yes, the date was set around the House schedule, to allow Mr. Rangel to participate. Our contact at his campaign has been Moises Perez, with whom we have spoken about this event several times. I have also communicated with Mr. Perez about the event via Facebook."
