One day after President Obama announced that he had raised $43.6 million in April, Mitt Romney announced a combined haul of $40.1 million for his campaign and the Republican National Committee.

It's the first monthly report since Romney became the officially presumptive nominee, which allows him to raise money jointly with the R.N.C., and pulls his fund-raising numbers much closer to those being reported by Obama's campaign than they had appeared in previous months.

The campaign touted the fact that 95 percent of donations were $250 or less. His reliance on maximum donations in previous months was seen by some as a sign of "tepid support among the Republican base."

The campaign reported a total of $61.4 million in cash on hand.
