State Senator Adriano Espaillat, who is running for Charlie Rangel's seat in Congress, told the Stonewall Democrats at a forum on Wednesday that if he's elected, he "will go to Washington and ensure that marriage equality becomes national law."
Another candidate in the race, Clyde Williams, addressed the group also. (Rangel did not.)
Today, the only Democratic state senator to have voted against legalizing same-sex marriage, Ruben Diaz of the Bronx, said Espaillat was "pandering" to the Stonewall Democrats, who make their congressional endorsements next week.
Diaz, in a public statement, also criticized Espaillat's earlier usage of the word "crackers" to describe people who "cracked" neighborhoods by dividing communities during redistricting.
