Yesterday, freshman State Senator Gustavo Rivera endorsed a challenger to 21-term congressman Charles Rangel. Meanwhile, Rivera got a challenger of his own.
According to State Board of Elections records, a person by the name of Manny Tavarez filed paperwork on April 19 to open up a campaign committee for the 33rd State Senate Seat in the Bronx, which Gustavo has represented since 2010, when he unseated Pedro Espada, who is currently facing corruption charges related to his nonprofit health care network.
The address used for the committee is the same one as Tavarez Sporting Goods Inc.
One web site I found listed a "Ms. Manny Tavarez" as "CEO" of Tavarez Sports, at "1690, Bronx, New York, China." I called the cell phone number listed for the contact person. When I asked for Manny Tavarez, the woman who answered the phone said "No" and hung up.
If any of you have better information, please let me know.

you should look further into this guy Tavarez. He doesn't give the name of this company he founded on his campaign website - as if there is something to hide. In his bio he says he is a lifelong resident of the Bronx but he went to school in Florida for at least 6 years. Doesn't say when he came back...either way you can't live in Florida, be born in Rochester, and also be a lifelong resident of the Bronx. He also says he does voter registration drives, but it's easy to find out that he has only voted once in New York in his entire life. How do you claim to do voter registration drives but not vote? That's pretty shady. All of it sounds rather shady.
Has there been more information about this guy's "company". I heard that people would call his campaign number and get a sports store on the line. What is it even called. Very shady. Very suspicious. I hope the guy has his taxes in order!
