Adriano Espaillat's congressional campaign has sought to cast his bid to oust Rep. Charles Rangel in grand, historical terms. Yesterday, for example, a volunteer compared the prospect of Espaillat becoming the first Dominican-American congressman to the 2008 election of the first African-American as president.
Today, the campaign announced Espaillat had been endorsed by world-famous designer Oscar de le Renta. In a statement distributed by the campaign, de la Renta said, "I am proud to endorse Adriano Espaillat for Congress and I call on all Democrats, particularly the Latino and Dominican communities, to join me in rallying behind Adriano’s historic run to change the political landscape of this country."
De la Renta, who is originally from the Dominican Republican, also said, "Espaillat's record clearly indicates that he will bring bold, new ideas to move our communities forward."
Among the issues Espaillat is focusing on are making "sure we bring the federal government back into the housing business," passing legislation to ensure undocumented students qualify for in-state tuition and financial at colleges and boosting job-training opportunities.
