Mayoral candidate and former comptroller Bill Thompson called this morning for a moratorium on the closing of struggling public schools, breaking away from his likely rivals in next year's Democratic primary, several of whom said they would not back the measure.
Thompson made the announcement during an appearance on an education panel at New York University this morning.
Manhattan Borough Presudent Scott Stringer and Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, who also attended the event, said they would like the pace of closures greatly reduced, but stopped short of calling for a moratorium.
Citing unnamed sources with knowledge of the administration's plans, Thompson said City Hall is looking to close more than three dozens schools, in addition to the 140 already closed during Michael Bloomberg's tenure.
