Without mentioning Lenox Terrace, Espaillat talks about Rangel and the ‘ivory tower’ problem
Adriano Espaillat is making an art of gently attacking Rep. Charles Rangel, who he is challenging in this year's primary.
In an NY1 interview last night, he repeatedly cast himself as a younger, newer, fresher alternative to his 81-year-old fellow Democrat.
In a appearance on Fox 5 today, Espaillat said that the problem with some members of Congress is "sometimes you get up there and you see the district form an ivory tower and you forget what the issues are on the ground."
He also addressed the ethnic politics of the race. Although he told NY1 his "decision wasn't driven by ethnic politics," he told Fox 5, "Every community wants their Jackie Robinson moment, right?"
Espaillat was speaking metaphorically about the ivory tower, presumably, but as he is no doubt aware, Rangel was fined for using part of his rent-stabilized Harlem residence as a campaign office, and was criticized for having four rent-stabilized units.
