Mayor Michael Bloomberg's has made the growth of New York's tech sector, and his desire to see it one day surpass Silicon Valley as the tech capital of the world, a public centerpiece of his third term in office.
He's gotten Cornell and Technion universities to agree to open a technology graduate campus on Roosevelt Island, and has held several press conferences at different social media company offices hailing their expansions in New York City.
On Monday, he made a point of showing up in person to accept a Shorty Award, a production of the New York tech start-up Sawhorse Media honoring "the best in Twitter and social media."
