CNN cuts about 50 jobs in restructuring
CNN laid off a number of employees Thursday as it restructures to further integrate its TV and digital news operations.
Capital has learned that around 50 employees are affected by the changes, though there is not expected to be any reduction in employee headcount. While some positions are being eliminated, the same number of new jobs will be created, albeit with different descriptions or responsibilities.
CNN is encouraging affected employees to apply for the new jobs, which are expected to start posting as early as this week.
The bulk of the layoffs were in the New York bureau, though staff in D.C. and Atlanta were also involved. The employees who were laid off or given new roles worked in news-gathering, CNN Digital and the company's libraries, as well as at CNN Money, which CNN is acquiring on June 1 as part of Time Inc.'s spinoff from parent Time Warner.
CNN Money had been a joint venture between CNN and Fortune magazine, but with the split, Fortune will be forming its own online brand.
The restructuring on Thursday came a month after 16 employees in CNN's image and sound department were laid off in Atlanta.
