The Wire adds two writers, plans to double staff
Atlantic Media's The Wire will add two new members to its staff next month, general manager Andrew Golis announced in a memo today.
Tim Carmody, who has written for websites like The Verge and Wired.com, will join as a contributing editor on the technology beat. David Sims, who has covered entertainment for The AV Club and New York City government for The Chief-Leader, will join as a staff writer on the entertainment beat.
These are two of the first new hires under Andrew Golis, who was named general manager of The Wire on Jan. 8. His mandate is to scale the site, a five-year-old news aggregation play that's aiming to broaden its advertising base.
Golis also has plans to double the size of The Wire's staff and he's currently on the hunt for an editor-in-chief to replace Gabriel Snyder, who recently left for a job as chief content officer of inside.com.
"Adding Tim and David to our ranks is just the beginning as we work to double the staff this year: more editors and writers and also staff dedicated to social media, product and design," Golis wrote.

Very happy to pass along the news that two sharp voices will soon be joining our ranks.
On March 3rd, Tim Carmody will join The Wire as a Contributing Editor covering technology. Tim is a curious, ranging thinker, writer and reporter who has done fantastic work for sites like The Verge and Wired. He'll take on the challenge of guiding our readers through the daily tech conversation, separating the hyped from the truly transformative, and looking far beyond gadgets and start-ups.
On the same day, David Sims will join The Wire as a Staff Writer covering Entertainment. David comes to us via the AV Club and The Chief-Leader. As a history of covering both television and city government might suggest, David is an agile writer and a voracious media consumer, and he is also, Joe says, a "formidable movie-trivia foe." He'll be working with Joe and Esther, who have done so much already to establish The Wire on the Entertainment beat.
As you've all heard me say, adding Tim and David to our ranks is just the beginning as we work to double the staff this year: more editors and writers and also staff dedicated to social media, product and design.
Thanks for the work you've done and the work you'll do as we build an ever smarter, sharper and more compulsively shareable Wire.
