With Yahoo! deal, Katie leaves ABC News, but talks continue about her daytime show
Katie Couric is negotiating an exit from ABC News, as talks to join Yahoo! heat up, people familiar with the situation confirm to Capital New York.
But the negotiations over whether she will continue her daytime talk show, "Katie," for the network are still ongoing, and the Yahoo! deal does not prevent her from keeping it.
“Katie is an incredible journalist and this was an opportunity that she couldn’t pass up,” an ABC executive close to the situation said in a statement about Couric's exit from ABC News. “Thanks to the powerful association between ABC News and Yahoo we know that Katie will continue to work closely with us and welcome her on our air anytime.”
And as for the question of the daytime talk-show negotiations: “There is nothing new to report,” a source close to Couric told Capital. The show’s second season is set to end next year. A decision on the show's future is expected sometime in December.
Yahoo! and ABC News maintain a very close relationship through the Yahoo! ABC News Digital Network, which the two companies tout as being the largest of all the traditional news organizations. Couric also hosts a show on the joint digital network called “Katie’s Take.”
Given that close relationship between ABC News and Yahoo!, don’t be surprised if content from her likely web program ends up on ABC programming or platforms, as suggested by the ABC executive.
