The Daily Beast is launching a weekend title to debut this fall along with a homepage makeover, editor-in-chief Tina Brown told staff today.

"Beast Weekend will refresh and refocus our weekend content towards culture as well as longer reads," Brown announced in a memo to employees of the site.

At the helm, as editorial director, will be Michael Moynihan, who's been writing and reporting for the Beast since September but whom you might better remember as the journalist who blew the lid off the Jonah Lehrer fabrication scandal last Summer.

His promotion is the latest in a series of revolving door moves at the Beast and its sister title, Newsweek, which is up for sale in its new digital-only format.

The two publications in recent weeks have lost key staff members such as editor Justine Rosenthal and C.E.O. Baba Shetty. Others have been added or promoted, including Jamelle Bouie, who was hired away from The American Prospect, and John Avlon, who was bumped up last week to executive editor of The Daily Beast, where the joint titles' parent company, I.A.C., has been consolidating resources as it aims to bring its disastrous Newsweek ownership to a close.

Brown also announced today that the Beast's homepage will be getting a "new-look update" in the fall. The site has basically looked the same since the day it launched in 2008.

A spokesman for the Beast said the site's traffic was up 37 percent year over year to 13.4 million in June according to Omniture metrics, and that ad revenue is up 23 percent year over year.

I’m thrilled to announce the promotion of Michael Moynihan to the position of Editorial Director of the new Beast Weekend, which is in the works for a fall launch along with our new-look homepage update. Beast Weekend will refresh and refocus our weekend content towards culture as well as longer reads. Michael will also play a more day-to-day role in the newsroom, assisting Executive Editor John Avlon and Managing Editors Paula Szuchman and Adam Auriemma with story selection and assignments at the morning editorial board meeting.

Michael has established himself as a respected and provocative voice at The Daily Beast since he joined us in September, 2012. Some of his recent juggernaut pieces include his Newsweek cover story “You’re Being Hacked”, his deep dive into the murky world of online jihadists and most recently, his reporting on the UK Observer’s NSA cover story. During his time as Managing Editor of Vice, Michael helped reinforce its edgy brand and revenue-generating content, including in the video arena. He will play a similar role going forward at The Daily Beast, reporting to John.

Please join me in celebrating this well-deserved promotion of Michael Moynihan to Editorial Director of Beast Weekend.

Best,

Tina
