Newsweek has lined up an all-star roster for its last-ever print edition before switching to a digital-only format under the name Newsweek Global.
The double issue that goes to bed tonight and hits newsstands Monday (and tablets on Sunday), will have bylines from former Newsweek editors-in-chief Jon Meacham, writing on the magazine's presidential covers, and Mark Whitaker, writing about civil rights coverage. Tina Brown wrote her usual editor's note.
Other past and present Newsweek bigs who contributed pieces include Evan Thomas (co-writing with former Time managing editor Jim Kelly on the newsweeklies' rivalry); Eleanor Clift (on women); Michael Isikoff (on Monica Lewinsky); David Ansen; Dan Klaidman; Andrew Romano and others.
A Newsweek spokesperson wouldn't say what the cover was.
But he did point out that Newsweek's total tablet sales across the iPad, Nook, Zinio and Kindle have increased 410 percent year-over-year.
The final print issue has about 50 ad pages, the New York Post's Keith Kelly reports.
The 80-year-old magazine, which merged with Barry Diller's Daily Beast last year, is in the process of finalizing dozens of layoffs that resulted from its transition to a digital-only title.
I will miss you Newsweek, and all your brilliant, incisive articles. When I was growing up, Newsweek was a staple in our household and the fights at our dinner table were instigated by your many news stories! It's simply a different world now and time to close up shop in the"old form". Like everything else, the car, the computer the IPHONE...products are obsolete before they make it out the door. Thank You.

A just a few years ago, the former owners, the Newsweek/Washington Post Group made a conscious decision to abandon the mainstream news reporting and move to a Northeastern, liberal-driven agenda and thereby commit “Reader/Subscriber Assisted Suicide”. I was one of the former Newsweek subscribers that ‘helped out’ by not renewing. Say what you will, but the fact is that the rest of the 4th Estate is caught in the very same death spiral.
As I recall, it was Editor-in-chief Jon Meacham who pulled that trigger! Nice job, Pal....
