Tina Brown promotes three at NewsBeast while staff awaits word of layoffs
Tina Brown announced three promotions this morning at her Newsweek Daily Beast Company, which is preparing to replace the Newsweek print edition with a digital-only title called Newsweek Global.
Newsweek executive editor Justine Rosenthal has been promoted to editorial director of The Newsweek Daily Beast Company, while Tunku Varadarajan, the executive editor of Newsweek International, will become editor of Newsweek Global. The existing international edition will be folded into the new digital title, a spokesperson confirmed.
Lastly, Deidre Depke, the former newsweek.com editor who returned to the fold earlier this year as executive editor of The Daily Beast, has been named editor of that website, which merged with Newsweek in early 2011.
Bill O'Meara, president of the Newspaper Guild of the New York, the union that represents about 100 employees of the Newsweek Daily Beast Company, told Capital this week that the Guild still had not been notified of expected layoffs.

I am pleased to announce some very important promotions that strengthen our organization as we commit to our digital future.
Justine Rosenthal, who as executive editor of Newsweek led the magazine through a challenging 12 months, producing stellar content week after week, has been promoted to editorial director of The Newsweek Daily Beast Company. In her new role Justine will be responsible for special issues of Newsweek Global, developing new editorial content streams, and next generation editorial-business initiatives with Baba and his team.
After two years of terrific work as executive editor of Newsweek International, Tunku Varadarajan will become editor of the all-digital Newsweek Global. Tunku’s global perspective and experience will be an invaluable asset in producing a magazine of authority that frames the world and makes sense of the week.
Deidre Depke, who has led The Beast to category-leading traffic growth this past year, is being promoted to editor, The Daily Beast. Deidre will work with Justine and Tunku to ensure operational collaboration between our two digital editorial products across platforms.
In their new roles, Justine, Tunku and Deidre will all continue to report to me.
