Columbia University has named three new members to the board of the Pulitzer Prizes, the annual journalism and literary accolades administered by the school each April.
Most notably, New Yorker staff writer Steve Coll has joined the 19-person board, whose rotating members serve three-year terms for up to nine years.
Coll, who's been with The New Yorker since 2005, is himself a two-time Pulitzer winner. In 1990 he won for Explanatory Reporting for a series of Washington Post articles co-authored with David A. Vise. And in 2005, he won for General Nonfiction for his book Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the C.I.A., Afghanistan, and Bin Laden, From the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001.
The other two new members are playwright Quiara Alegría Hudes, who won the 2012 Pulitzer for drama but is best known for writing the book for the hit Broadway musical In the Heights, and Aminda “Mindy” Marques Gonzalez, the executive editor of The Miami Herald.
Earlier this year, the Pulitzer board appointed ProPublica managing editor Stephen Engelberg and elected New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman co-chair.
At least one other seat will be opening up soon, that of Columbia Journalism School dean Nicholas Lemann, who announced that he will retire from his post as dean at the end of the current academic year. The dean of Columbia's Journalism School serves as a permanent non-voting member, as does the administrator of the prizes, Sig Gissler.
