Look for more Anthony Bourdain-type hires as CNN tries to bust out of its rut

Weeks after CNN chief Jim Walton announced he was stepping down amid ratings lows and all sorts of other problems at the third-place cable news network, chatter is spreading about what CNN will do next to breathe some life into its ailing lineup.

An item in today's New York Post reveals that company brass is kicking around ideas for reality shows, late-night talk and new star-studded hires a la recent Travel Channel poach Anthony Bourdain.

In the past few weeks, the No. 3 cable news channel has started seeking out reality-show ideas and big-name stars not afraid to talk politics. They have even begun working on a late-night talk show, The Post has learned.

Convinced that its current programming badly needs updating, CNN execs have been making the rounds of Hollywood’s top talent agencies — something entertainment networks do several times a year but a first for the old-line news channel.

In a series of conference calls, the network has also been soliciting ideas from the same producers who supply reality shows to channels like Bravo, Discovery and History, according to sources.

Meanwhile, Fishbowl D.C. reports in an unsourced item that CNN on Friday shot a pilot anchored by the husband/wife power-duo of John Avlon and Margaret Cooper.

BuzzFeed is launching a weekly show on Sirius XM:

Sirius XM Radio and BuzzFeed today announced the launch of BuzzFeed Radio, a live, weekly, call-in show on which the editors of BuzzFeed—the rapidly-expanding and first true social news organization—will dissect, discuss and offer a behind-the-scenes look at the inspiration, reaction and creative process behind the week's biggest viral sensations. From eclectic and extraordinary images and videos to lists and original reports, hosts will cover BuzzFeed’s most social content, talk about their personal favorites, and connect directly with listeners to hear what they think.

BuzzFeed Radio will launch on Tuesday, August 14 at 6:00 pm ET on SiriusXM Stars Too (channel 104) and be hosted by Sports Editor Jack Moore (@BuzzFeedJack) and Senior Editor Whitney Jefferson (@twitney). BuzzFeed Radio will air live Tuesdays from 6:00 - 7:00 pm ET on SiriusXM Stars Too, with encore presentations airing Wednesdays at 6:00 am ET and 9:00 pm ET. BuzzFeed editors and reporters representing the range of content verticals will be regular additions to the show.
