The Daily News has lost its executive editor for digital, Scott Cohen, who's headed to a news startup called Vocativ in another few weeks, Capital has learned.
Cohen is a well-liked though somewhat divisive figure at the paper, which he joined in 2008 following a stint at ABC News. He has also worked at Interview.
On Cohen's watch the tabloid's digital strategy has evolved over the past several years. The website, nydailynews.com, has increased its audience and become a more digital-first offering, oftentimes scarcely resembling its print sibling with S.E.O.-maximized celebrity slideshows and small-bore national crime news; that's rankled some old-timers for whom the print edition remains sacrosanct.
The move comes not long after Cohen had consolidated his power within the newsroom, and it coincides with change in digital strategy at tabloid rival the New York Post, whose website was trailing that of the News by about 3.6 million pageviews as of January, according to comScore. The Post recently hired Gawker alum Remy Stern to lead its digital operation; he reports to longtime Post lieutenant Jesse Angelo, also the editor of News Corp's tablet title, The Daily, who was recently tasked with overseeing high-level strategy on nypost.com.
Cohen's departure, one in a handful (both forced and voluntary) that have been reported in recent weeks, also appears to leave nydailynews.com without a captain as it continues to take shape under newly-installed editor Colin Myler, who is the subject of lengthy New York magazine feature this week.
Reached by phone Tuesday evening, Cohen declined to comment.
Vocativ appears, from its About Us page, to be a reporting platform for citizen journalists that feeds content sites.
