Governor Andrew Cuomo, whose sister is married to fashion designer Kenneth Cole and who was listed last year on a People magazine list of attractive men, said he was a little "fashion conscious" this morning.
That's because before he was introduced at a breakfast honoring of African-American Day Parade in Harlem, a couple of notably snappy-dressing elected officials, Rep. Charlie Rangel and Assemblyman Keith Wright, were being recognized for their work.
"And what's worse is that I thought I was styling today," Cuomo said, to laughs. "I put on a blue shirt, which is a little risky for me."
When one of the guests on stage suggested Cuomo might look better if he weren't wearing a tie, he said, "I'll take the tie off." And he did.
In the more serious part of his remarks, Cuomo said the problem of gun violence had to be addressed with better enforcement of federal gun control laws and better economic opportunities for young people. Al Sharpton's National Action Network called on Cuomo after a shooting spike over Labor Day weekend to make the issue of gun violence more of a priority.
Cuomo also used the occasion to announce that Kevin Wardally—a noted political operative with a long association with Bill Lynch Associates—will start a new job with in the state labor department.
Cuomo left after his remarks and did not march in the parade. He had another event later in the morning on Long Island.
