The 2011 Tony Award nominations were announced this morning, and (surprise!) The Book of Mormon is getting top props with 14 nods.
Mormon, from the creators of the Comedy Central TV show "South Park" and Broadway's Avenue Q, has been receiving excellent reviews all year and is not much of a surprise. It will vie for best musical against Sister Act, Catch Me If You Can and The Scottsboro Boys, which had a short run after transferring from Off-Broadway. The underdog still got 12 nominations, which is reportedly a record for a show that is already closed, according to the Times. Patrick Healy did a great liveblog of today's announcement of the 65th annual awards by Matthew Broderick and Anika Noni Rose at the New York Public Library of the Performing Arts.
The full list of nominees are below, along with links to reviews from Capital writers Mark Sullivan and Wayne Hoffman.
