Welcome to Cut Time! It's a monthly music mix carefully beat-matched for Capital readers' listening pleasure. Brooklyn D.J. Chris Hires made a mix of nostalgic '90s jams.
Grunge gets a lot of attention when people talk about '90s rock, but as someone who came of age during the second half of the '90s, it's that post-grunge phase that comes to mind for me. I grew up in Dallas, Tex., and my parents gave me a stereo for my 10th birthday, so I spent the rest of the summer in my room, obsessively listening to the radio (it's not as sad as it sounds). 94.5 The Edge was Dallas' local alternative station (they now broadcast on 102.1), and over the next few years it was the main musical influence in my life. Throughout middle school I'd go to sleep listening to their countdown show, The Top Eight At Nine (which aired, inexplicably, at 10), and later in high school I started branching out into independent music thanks to their Sunday night show, The Adventure Club. For this mix I tried to focus on songs that hold up as well today as I thought they did then, and did my best to avoid gimmicky one-hit-wonder picks (I might have failed there by including Geggy Tah, but just go with it). Nostalgia's a hell of a drug, so stream the mix below and take a trip back to the mid-'90s with us.
We highly (highly!) recommend that you just listen to the mix, instead of checking out the playlist on the next page. It's just too much fun to sit and guess which song is coming up next, and take a few seconds to realize which song it is, and then sing along (perhaps only in your mind, in your cubicle).
