Source: Mark-Viverito to endorse Espaillat over Rangel
According to a knowledgeable source, City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito will endorse State Senator Adriano Espaillat’s challenge to 22-term incumbent Rep. Charlie Rangel.
Espaillat, who ran competitively against Rangel in 2012, will announce his second bid for the seat tomorrow.
Spokesmen for Mark-Viverito and Espaillat’s campaign declined to comment.
In 2012, Mark-Viverito endorsed Rangel over Espaillat.
She is also a former member of 1199 SEIU, the powerful health care workers' union which endorsed Rangel in 2012 and made headlines when its political director suggested it could endorse one of Rangels' opponents this year.
She is a close ally of Mayor Bill de Blasio, who recently praised one of Rangel’s other opponents in this year’s race, Harlem pastor Michael Walrond.
