GHENT—Governor Andrew Cuomo has missed NY1's deadline to agree to a debate with his Democratic primary challenger, Zephyr Teachout.

Last week, the station formally invited both candidates to participate in a debate on September 2, and subsequently asked the two campaigns to respond by 7 p.m. today.

The Cuomo campaign did not respond to that request, according to a source with the campaign.

A spokeswoman for NY1 did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Since the invitation was issued, Cuomo has repeatedly said the possibility of a debate was an issue for the "campaigns" to decide.

Teachout's campaign has criticized Cuomo for not agreeing to the request.

"On September 10 the governor's gonna wake up regretting this. He's got a real challenge on his hands and he doesn't even know it," Mike Boland, the campaign manager for Teachout, told Capital on Thursday night.

Boland was speaking outside the town hall in Ghent, while Teachout met with the Columbia County Democratic Committee inside.

The Teachout campaign has said that it hopes to use the alotted airtime regardless of Cuomo's participation.
